Buffy Martines: 25 Years of Leaving No Camper Behind

The summer sun was just peeking over the treetops when the campgrounds came alive. Counselors called out cheerful greetings, and laughter echoed from the dining hall. At the archery range, a young boy in a wheelchair steadied his bow, let the arrow fly, and watched it land perfectly on target. Around him, campers erupted in cheers—not because of his wheelchair, but because of his aim.

Moments like these are the heart of MDA Summer Camp—and for the last 25 years, Buffy Martines has been working to make sure as many children as possible get to live them.

A Sister’s Stories Spark a Lifelong Commitment

Buffy’s connection to camp began with her sister, Annie Clary, who worked for MDA and often shared heartfelt stories about the children she met.

“Listening to [my sister’s] stories about the children who attend this amazing event, and what camp meant to them, inspired me to get involved.”

When Buffy first visited MDA Summer Camp, she knew she had found a cause that would remain close to her heart forever.

“From the moment I stepped foot on the property, I was struck by the level of inclusion… They were able to do anything and everything they wanted – just like all other kids.”

“Leave No Camper Behind”

Buffy quickly adopted the motto “Leave no camper behind.” It became more than a phrase—it became her mission.

She learned that some families couldn’t afford to send their children to camp, even though the experience could be life-changing.

“Kids with muscular dystrophy already face enough challenges—affording camp should not be one of them.”

When she discovered that campers were turning down the chance to attend because of limited funding, she knew something had to be done.

“No camper should ever be left behind.”

Help Us Keep the Momentum Going All Year

Camp may be over for this year, but the mission continues. Volunteer with Bridging Resources to support children and families throughout the year—and help lay the groundwork for next summer’s camp.

The Power of Camp

Over the years, Buffy’s dedication has supported countless campers, giving them opportunities to try new activities, build lifelong friendships, and simply be kids.

“The impact that I have had is not important to me. The impact that CAMP has is what’s important. And I know, without a doubt, that MDA Summer Camp changes lives.”

And the impact is real:

  • It costs $2,000 to send one child to camp for the week.
  • Every year, more children apply than there is funding available.
  • Without donors like Buffy, many kids would miss out on the chance to swim, zipline, and experience the freedom camp provides.

A Hope for the Future

As Buffy looks ahead, her dream is for the camp to continue thriving for generations to come.

“My hope is that MDA Summer Camp will find a new generation of supporters who will keep this important service available for many, many years to come.”

She encourages anyone considering getting involved to take the leap.

“I also hope that everyone reading these thoughts will join me – you won’t regret it!”
